Abstract

Many artists often contemplate their purpose for being an artist. In fact, a common theme that has come up throughout this program is the idea of “finding your reason” for being an artist. For many, the reason may be purely financial. For some, the desire to pursue an art form that they’re passionate about and improve their skills is enough of a motivator. For others, the desire to be famous for their work is their driving force. Some artists, however, see being an artist as a distinct responsibility that they’ve inherited to be a voice and a “reflection” for the cultures and societies of which they may represent. Some see themselves as being obligated to use their art to speak out against injustice and to advocate for those with less influence. The perspective shared by this artist, that is the thread that carries this EP, is one best articulated by famed artist John Lennon: “My role in society, or any artist's or poet's role, is to try and express what we all feel. Not to tell people how to feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, but as a reflection of us all.” This EP, aptly titled “Reflections” is not the ponderance of the artist's role, but rather a statement of Jenna’s own sense of obligation to reflect the times as she knows and sees it.
