Abstract

The intent of this paper is to delve deeper into the narrative inspiration, analyze the musical choices of the composition, as well as reflect on the experience of recording at AIR Studios. My goal for the culminating experience was to compose a piece representative of myself as a composer and the moods for which I most enjoy composing: romance and melancholy. After months of searching for a video or story to compose my final piece to, I decided to score several passages from Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles. The overarching themes of the novel are love and grief which tie in beautifully with my original goal. Once I had settled on this text as my source of inspiration, I moved forward with developing themes and motifs that helped to reflect the depth of the characters’ emotions and the landscape of the scenes. Ultimately, I finished my experience by hearing the piece brought to life through the musicians at AIR Studios.
