Abstract

The Music Workshop Project provides regular opportunities for people with a range of mental health problems to express themselves through music. Along with the therapeutic effects of being creative it aims to encourage people to develop interpersonal skills through improvisational groupwork. Formed in 1995, the project appears to have been very successful. Recent years have seen a trend within mental health towards evidence-based practice so as to provide services and interventions that are demonstrably effective. In the light of this, it was decided to research the effectiveness of the project in an attempt to elicit the views of service users and local mental health staff.
