Presentation Description

Creating the conditioning to maximize student engagement and learning is an art and science. Touchstones deepen dialogue, ground and guide students and professors as they cultivate a brave and safe space over the course of the semester. Touchstones inspire students and professors to live and express their deepest values in the classroom. In this workshop, we will unpack how touchstones are one of the foundational practices for a memorable class.

Pre-Session Materials

  • Read this list of Touchstones and select the top 10 that you think would be most useful to create the conditions for brave and safe dialogue and learning in your classroom. If there are others not on this list that you want to add, bring them to our session.

Post-Session Exercise

Create a Touchstones handout and introduce your proposed Touchstones list to your class. Have a discussion and reach consensus on your classes list to adopt for the rest of the semester. You're about halfway through the semester and it's never too late to model effective pedagogy as teachers and facilitators. Engage in a dialogue with students about how these proposed guidelines will support your classroom experience for the remainder of the semester.

Use the list of touchstones from our workshop to inspire the creation of our own list. Identify 8-12 touchstones that you want to bring into your classroom every time you meet. Come prepared next week to share your list and describe how you will involve students in the creation of a list of touchstones you will incorporate into your own classroom culture.
