Abstract
This paper offers a comparative analysis of two acclaimed fantasy trilogies by women writers, The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness and The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden. By focusing on a qualitative analysis of structural narratological functions through the actions of the main characters (hero / villain), the article argues that the hero displays a personal motivation in both trilogies, which results in a larger impact of their mission. The personal motivation appears to be linked to the protection of family and the underlying construction of a unique perception of affection. This motivation modifies the roles and the impact of functions on other characters, while offering an alternative in power relations.
