Abstract
The focus of my project is the adaptation of classical music into contemporary musical genres. This project is the first time I am arranging music for a band and trying out new music technologies like Ableton, after over 20 years of experience playing classical violin. I posed a considerable challenge. Classical musicians in South Korea often struggle to collaborate with popular music genres because of common biases against using classical instruments. The goal is to show different ways classical instruments can be used with alternative playing techniques. This new task made me face and conquer my deep-seated biases.
Four different arrangements have been created, each with unique rhythms inspired by hip-hop, EDM, and swing jazz, and are now presented as classical interpretations with violin. These varied music pieces from various genres provide Korean classical musicians with new perspectives and inspiration.
