From Mozart to Monk: Bowed Strings in Contemporary Music

Abstract
This paper documents the composition & production of a two-movement suite for string quartet and jazz quartet. Motivated by a love of these two distinct traditions and a lack of repertoire combining them, the project explores the unique textural and expressive capabilities of this hybrid ensemble. Drawing on elements from classical chamber music — motivic development, extended string techniques — alongside jazz elements like improvisation, the suite attempts to combine these traditions in a way that highlights their strengths while treating them as equals. The compositional process began with four motifs, two of which became primary recurring material throughout the suite. The production process was challenging, requiring creative solutions such as staggered recording sessions, tempo mapping, and the creation of a full audio mockup. This paper documents the key decisions made throughout each stage of the project, offering insight into the obstacles and rewards of writing for this unique hybrid ensemble.
