Abstract
This culminating experience documents a practice-based research project that explores the development of my artistic identity through the composition, performance, and production of an original collection of songs. Drawing inspiration from Black musical traditions, particularly R&B, funk, soul, and neo-soul, the project investigates how groove, vocal expression, and songwriting can be integrated into my own creative practice as a contemporary Chinese artist. Through an iterative process of composing, recording, arranging, and critical reflection, I examine how technical skills and artistic intention inform one another. The portfolio includes original works that explore themes of intimacy, identity, vulnerability, and personal freedom while demonstrating a range of musical approaches and production techniques. By combining creative practice with reflective analysis, this project contributes to my professional development as a songwriter, vocalist, and producer, while establishing a clearer artistic direction for my future career.
