Abstract
A Home Unknown: The Haitian Diaspora, Identity & Music, examines the relationship between the Haitian diaspora, cultural identity, and musical expression through the lens of first-generation Haitian-American artist, Sterlyn Termine. Through historical research, musical analysis, and original compositions, this Culminating Experience project examines how globalization, colonialism, political instability, and ongoing violence have contributed to the displacement of millions of Haitians and the cultural disconnection experienced throughout the diaspora. Sterlyn’s four original compositions reflect themes of displacement, resilience, healing, and belonging. These works incorporate influences from Haitian and African musical traditions, Jazz, and BGJI musical concepts to explore questions of heritage and self-discovery. Ultimately, this project demonstrates how music can bridge cultural gaps, foster greater historical understanding, and inspire social activism in communities.
