Abstract

Wuxiscape is a soundscape composition project based on field recordings collected in Wuxi, China. The project explores the relationship between listening, memory, place, and environmental sound through a series of electroacoustic works. Drawing from acoustic ecology, experimental listening practices, and the Chinese philosophical text Sheng Wu Ai Le Lun, the project examines how everyday sounds can carry cultural, emotional, and spatial meaning without relying on conventional musical structures. Field recordings from natural, urban, and cultural sites in Wuxi were edited, layered, and processed to create compositions that move between documentation and musical interpretation. Through this process, Wuxiscape reflects on how sound can represent a city beyond visual imagery and how listening can reshape one’s understanding of home, environment, and identity.
