Abstract

Modular synthesis is an ever-evolving area of music technology that has given musicians of all genres a powerful tool to sculpt sound. In more recent years, a new layer of modularity was achieved through the creation of programmable modules, resulting in a space where synthesists can alter the code of a module to completely change its function. This project explores these tools through the development of a MIDI-controlled pitch quantizer based around the module Lich. Using MaxGen combined with OWL technology, this work aims to dive into the process of coding for modular synthesis modules, understanding the foundations of low-level programming and text based-coding. As a practical and educational portion of the work, a device that implements CV and MIDI processing to achieve quantized notes was created, accompanied by explanations of each portion of the code, and was made available to the public for download and modification. This product is intended to be adapted and expanded by users.
