Abstract
How can In Search of Haydn can be used to encourage critical reading of composer documentaries more generally? This essay first discusses framework for understanding the modes in which this documentary operates, considered from a film perspective. I then step back to consider In Search of Haydn from the perspective of Haydn reception, scrutinizing critically the various themes that emerge. The aim is to provide a model for how to enable students to think more consciously about what they are doing when they view a documentary about a musical figure.
