Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the effect of patient tailored music intervention in reducing the incidence of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and the impact of quality of life. Background & Significance: Nausea and vomiting are among the most common serious side effects of cancer chemotherapy and affect patients QoL. One of the important approaches used in treatment is music which has become an important part of medicine and health care in recent years. In this RCT study we want to verify the effect of patient tailored music intervention in reducing the incidence of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and the impact of quality of life. Conceptual or Clinical Model/Philosophic or Theoretic Framework: Neurophysiology: Modern neurophysiology shows that the nervous system of the brain edge and net structure play a major role to regulate organs' activity and body function. Music can play a direct role on these structures, to regulate and coordinate the visceral activity, mood and behavior. This is the phythical theoretical basis for music intervention in releasing the chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting. Methods & Analysis: It was a RCT study.94 cancer patients were enrolled from September to December, 2016. They all accepted chemotherapy with moderate to high emetic risks and be randomly divided into the experimental group and the control group, with 47 cases in each group. The control group was given routine nursing; based on this, the experimental group received the patient tailored music intervention by trained musical therapist and nurses. And the MASCC anti-emesis tool and Functional Living Index-Emesis (FLIE) were used to compare the relief degrees of CINV and the impacts of patients' living functions in the two groups.
