Empirical Analysis on the Intervention of Music Therapy on Mental Health of College Students

Abstract

Many college students are under great pressure in academics and employment. Their mental health requires special attention from educators. This paper attempts to evaluate the intervention effects of music therapy on the mental health of college students. The subjects were selected from college students from grade 2 and grade 3. Considering their music ability, the music group therapy was designed carefully to include warm-up activities, thematic activities, discussion and sharing, and summary. The mental health of the subjects was measured before and after the therapy, using adolescent self-worth scale, Inclusion of Others Scale, and Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) scale. The results show that music therapy effectively improved the mental health of college students in terms of self-worth, self-acceptance and tolerance of others, and alleviated their mental problems like anxiety, depression, interpersonal sensitivity, compulsion and paranoia.
