Abstract
This project is an exploration of the Irish folklore/storytelling tradition, channelled through the modern, rebellious and DIY aesthetic of alternative music. All My Friends began as a thought experiment on forging a world of characters, each personifying a different facet of one’s personality. It was a way of creating distance between a writer and his writing, allowing the songs to take on their own lives and be free of the self-consciousness inherent in the documentation of one’s adolescence. Somewhere along the course of this year, this record developed into an exploration of lost youth, mine and those of my closest friends and family. The “Friends” became the keepers of stories of people that I have known, versions of myself, and imagined voices that helped me understand the world around me. Using a combination of traditional folk instruments and modern sounds and techniques, a wide ranging tale was spun, with overarching themes and characters, all brought together but a singular voice.
