Abstract

The purpose of my project is to forge my own artistic identity by taking the historical musical precedent of 1960s/1970s Rock n’ Roll and bringing it to its 21st century technological and sonic conclusion. This was achieved by self-ethnographical and analytical research, by way of studying my artistic influences from 1966-1973 and the ways in which musicians from this era composed, engineered, and produced an album. The work I produced for this project is a body of 5 recorded compositions that demonstrate a thorough understanding of the production styles, engineering techniques, and compositional elements from 1966-1973. My work then goes on to challenge and derivate from these styles and techniques by using analog and ‘older’ instrumentation in conjunction with updated, 21st century recording technology and capabilities. By adopting, in particular, a modern ‘Wall of Sound’ production and engineering approach, I am able to continue and progress the genre of 1960s and 1970s Rock in the 21st century.
