Abstract
This project is to create a body of work containing five songs that connect my artistic voice, musicality and personal identity to my cultural heritage. These songs are written, performed and recorded by me, with the help of my colleagues, drawing inspiration from Māori music and storytelling. These songs offer a reflection on my connection with this part of my heritage, and re-introduce myself as a Māori artist. This project also serves as a personal exploration of songwriting and artist identity. Growing up in New Zealand, I had many opportunities as a child to connect with my Māori culture, but as I delved deeper into the world of western classical music I found myself unable to connect my heritage with my artistic practice. This project develops a body of work that incorporates several elements of Māori cultural, musical and storytelling traditions with my classical cello training and newly found artistic voice.
