Abstract
The Emotion Driven Synthesizer, or Emo-DS for short, is a Max/MSP based audiovisual synthesizer that creates sounds and visuals based on emotional parameters. Based on both the Punset universe of emotions as well as the valence-arousal graph, the synthesizer uses emotion-label knobs to modify various timbre-related parameters at once. The relationship between timbre parameters and different emotions are based on studies made on classical instruments and their timbrical-emotional (TE) response, translating these studies to the world of synthesis. To make the emotion more clear to the user and the audience, the synthesizer creates a visual representation of the sound it is generating, based on the relationships between emotions and colors. The goal of the project is to create an instrument with a purpose, an intuitive interface, and add creative value for both music creators, sound designers and live performers alike.
