Abstract

This paper encompasses the compositional process to the animation-score “The Snail and the Whale” (Magic Light Productions, 2019) recorded at the Air Studios London in June 2023 within the scope of the Culminating Experience as part of the Master’s Program in Scoring for Film and TV at the Berklee College of Music. Exposed are the initial ideas, the actual compositional process, the recording session at the Air Studios including its preparation as well as the post-production covering the mixing and mastering of the recorded composition. In order to underscore the animation, different compositional devices were used, such as orchestration, texture, timbre, harmony, rhythm, and articulation, which are closely discussed in line with a detailed narrative analysis of the movie in order to manifest the possibilities of underscoring the animation with an orchestra.
